Effects of Intercropping, Nitrogen Fertilization and Corn Plant Density on Yield, Crude Protein Accumulation and Ensiling Characteristics of Silage Corn Interseeded into Alfalfa Stand

Interseeding silage corn into an alfalfa stand following its spring harvests to produce mixed would feasibly break the restriction of production during a hot-rainy summer. In this 2-yr experiment, alfalfa–silage intercropping system (AC) with nitrogen (N) fertilization rates 0, 60, 120, and 180 kg N ha?1 plant densities 30,000, 45,000, 60,000 plants was compared monocultured (CK) managed using local farmers’ practice. Intercropping significantly decreased dry matter (DM) yield by 31.5% on average, while increasing application rate density promoted DM crude protein (CP) accumulation intercropped corn, could achieve same CP as CK—it did in most cases. Although contents, pH values, NH3-N concentrations were silage, fermentation quality not reduced CP, water soluble carbohydrates, lactic acid contents dramatically increased 16.3%, 17.8%, 72.9% those CK, respectively. For opposite effects quality, treatment combination medium (45,000 ha?1) fertilized at (120 evaluated optimum for more balanced productivity, nutritive values fermentative characteristics coexisting period.
